FAQ

Your files and your Drive

Does Klar see my whole Google Drive?

No. Klar uses Google's narrowest permission. It can only see the one Klar folder it creates in your Drive. Everything else (your photos, your documents, your other folders) stays invisible to us. We can't read it, list it, or touch it.

What if Klar shuts down?

Your files don't go with it. Everything Klar filed stays in your own Google Drive, renamed and organized in folders you can open any time. No export, no starting over.

What happens if I cancel?

Everything Klar did stays done. Your files stay in your Google Drive, in the folders Klar set up and under the clear names Klar gave them. Nothing goes back to a pile of "scan_0042.pdf" files. Klar simply stops filing new things and sending reminders.

How does Klar organize my files?

You don't have to build a system. Klar creates one for you in your Klar folder in Google Drive: folders like HVAC, Roof and Plumbing, with every file renamed so you can tell what it is. IMG_4382.jpg becomes Mitsubishi-Electric-MXZ-3C24NA4-2-ton-Heat-Pump_HVAC.jpg. Your files stay yours in Drive. The Klar app turns them into a clear picture of your home: what you have, what's missing, what's under warranty, and what's coming due.

Does Klar work with Dropbox, iCloud or OneDrive?

Not today. Klar starts with Google Drive, and a free Google account is all you need. If you'd like another, tell us. Requests shape what comes next.

Where do my documents actually live?

In your Google Drive, in a folder Klar creates. If you cancel, they stay exactly where they are.

What does Klar keep on its own systems?

The text Klar extracts, which is what lets it answer questions about your home, and a record of what was processed. The files themselves are yours.

Getting started

Do I have to learn a new app or type everything in?

No. If you can send an email, you can use Klar. There's no data entry: Klar reads what you send and fills in the details itself.

How do I get started?

Give your home a short nickname, and that becomes your Klar address, like elm-street@klar.house. It's yours. Then send anything about your home to your address: a long email thread with your contractor, a full inspection report, a quick note about a noise in the furnace. Klar reads it, renames it, and files it in your Google Drive. Have a lot sitting in your inbox? Gmail can forward several emails at once as attachments, and Klar unpacks each one.

Can I point Klar at a folder I already have in Google Drive?

Not yet — we plan to. Today Klar builds your record from what you forward going forward.

What you can send

What can I forward?

Almost anything about your home: PDFs, photos, scanned receipts, manuals, the emails themselves, or a note you type. Klar reads photos too, like the brand, model or serial number on a nameplate, and renames the file to something useful. Two exceptions. Klar doesn't read through spreadsheet cells, since spreadsheets often hold outdated numbers; save the page you need as a PDF instead. And it can't open files shared as links (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud or OneDrive). Download the file and attach it instead. For Google Drive, opening links would need wider access to your Drive, and keeping that access narrow is the point.

Can I send a lot at once?

Yes. In Gmail, select the emails and choose "Forward as attachment." Klar files up to 15 documents per send and lists anything left over in its reply. Forward the same batch again and Klar files the rest without doubling up. Keep each send under 25 MB. Past that, Gmail swaps the files for Drive links, which Klar can't open, so send a few at a time. Photos with no text file fine from the email you signed up with. For photos from anyone else, add a line saying what's in them. See it step by step →

Is there a limit on how long a document can be?

No. When Klar files an invoice, receipt, warranty, estimate or inspection report, it reads every page — a 40-page inspection report is read cover to cover. The limits are on how much arrives at once: up to 15 documents in one email, each file up to 30 MB, and the whole email under 25 MB (bigger than that, Gmail turns the files into Drive links Klar can't open). Each home can send up to 500 documents a day, 150 in any hour. If something isn't filed, Klar's reply says which and when to send it again.

What if a company sends a link instead of the document?

Klar files what the email says, like the policy number, amount due and renewal date, and keeps the link on the record so you can open it later. Klar can't open the link itself, so if you want the full document on file, download it and send it as an attachment.

Can I send a screenshot?

Yes. Paste it into an email or attach it: an order confirmation, a receipt, even a text from your contractor. Klar reads it like any document.

What if Klar files something in the wrong place?

It can happen, and it's quick to fix. After each filing, Klar emails you what it found, so you can check it and fix anything that's off right away.

Billing

What does Klar cost?

$49 a year for one home, everything included. Storage is your own Google Drive, so there's no storage bill. Wondering if it's worth it? See why it pays →

Why isn't Klar free?

Free apps are usually paid for with your data. Klar is paid for by you, so there are no ads and nothing about your home is ever sold. Your files stay in your own Google Drive.

I have more than one home.

More than one home? $99 a year covers up to 3. Coming soon.

Will Klar email me?

Yes: a note after each filing, a reminder before service comes due, and about once a week a nudge when there's something worth adding. Never a chore list. You can turn the weekly emails off anytime in Settings.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time. Everything Klar filed stays organized in your Drive.

Does it renew automatically?

Yes, annually.
